We speak with Katitza Rodríguez, International Rights Director from the Electronic Frontier Foundation on the ubiquitous rise of smart city surveillance technology. Many governments are ostensibly using the data to try and prevent the pandemic. But then how do we measure the efficacy of mass surveillance? Especially when many countries (even advanced ones) lack the legal frameworks to hold themselves accountable for data breaches, or simply outright misuse. Drastic times obviously call for drastic measures, but they also call for transparency – especially with our personal data.
